roll forming machines impact process quality
Dec 09, 2022
Like most metalworking or forming equipment, roll forming machines are available in a variety of sizes. Roll forming machines with more passes can produce more complex shapes, as each successive pass of the machine is able to form additional bends to produce the desired profile. In addition to the complexity of the profile, the overall size of the profile that can be rolled on a particular machine depends on a variety of machine specifications.

The most straightforward is the scroll space. Roll space, or the area where roll tools are loaded per pass, is the limiting factor in the width of the metal strip that can be rolled into a format. For example, a machine with 18 inches of roll space cannot form strip that is wider than 18 inches. When the flat strip enters the machine, this is the point where the maximum roll space is required. As the strip is gradually formed by bending, the overall width requirements of the machine decrease.

The capability of any given machine in terms of section height or depth is primarily measured by the available vertical distance between spindles. Together with the distance from the bottom spindle centerline to the top of the machine base and the horizontal center distance between the mill stands, the maximum roll diameter is determined.

In addition to the limitations just mentioned, there must be a gap between the outside diameter of the bottom roller flange and the top roller pad, as well as the gap between the cross-section edge and the top roller pad. Also note that the bottom roller flange diameter includes a lead-in line or flared profile to aid in passing from one channel to another.
